He was Ipswich Town’s first public relations officer for 10 years to 1984, coinciding with the club’s most glorious era. Mel witnessed all 66 matches during the incredible 1980-81 campaign and his duties that season included writing Sir Bobby Robson’s programme notes and acting as co-commentator on Radio Orwell as they brought Ipswich supporters news from their UEFA Cup excursions. He also worked for the Ipswich Evening Star, where he was chief sports writer, for 20 years.
